The #PSLI graduates a new class of high performing marketers

High-performing marketing managers from four global firms met at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business for Cohort Three of the Professional Services Leadership Initiative #PSLI.

This two-session program is organized by the Center for Excellence in Service and the Office of Executive Programs at Smith. Founding partners of the PSLI are #Randstad, one of the world’s premier staffing companies; #JLL, the global real estate brokerage firm; #TRowePrice, the international investment management firm; and #PwC, a worldwide leader in consulting services.

The sessions were held October 27-29, 2015 and January 26-28, 2016.  Topics explored in class included global branding, digital marketing, data analytics, aligning the marketing and sales teams, and customer experience management.  Case studies, written for the program, focused on strategic problems faced by Randstad and JLL were featured.  Between the sessions, participants completed team-based Action Learning Projects (ALPs), applying what they had learned to real problems facing their companies.  Our PSLI partners sent senior-level executives to Smith to observe the teams’ ALP presentations, and offer feedback. Upon returning to their firms, the teams will be operationalizing their projects.

The program was designed by Janet Wagner, associate professor of marketing and director of the Center for Excellence in Service, and adjunct professor Suzanne Lowe, president of Expertise Marketing, LLC.

Expertise Marketing celebrates 20 years

Expertise Marketing just turned 20 years old!

This milestone is worthy of celebration and reflection. I’m proud that I ran the business as a business, instead of just a Suzanne Lowe lifestyle choice. That meant being objective about successes and/or failures. It also meant running the business through a service portfolio. What revenue streams and service lines could withstand recessions and boom times? It also meant having a clear a mission that would help fuel my energy to re-commit every day. I had to remember that I loved helping companies grow and especially that I am motivated to help women business owners and leaders.

There have been disappointments too. I am drawn to innovation and I embrace change. But I don’t see this cultural approach from most professional- and B2B service enterprises. Most seem too change-resistant to me. Also I see too much gatekeeping and internal barrier-building, as if the spirit of entrepreneurism has evolved in the toward a lack of collaboration. This mentality is bad for success! I see underinvestment in organically growing a professional or B2B company. Acquisitions and mergers are fine, but leaves too many silos. Last, I see a lot of copycat behavior. What happened to differentiation?

T. Rowe Price digital marketer applauds the #PSLI Professional Services Leadership Initiative

T. Rowe Price’s senior digital marketer describes the benefits she and her colleagues received from their participation in the first cohort of the Professional Services Leadership Initiative (PSLI). The PSLI just graduated its second cohort. These benefits include building stronger relationships with colleagues, learning from other professional service sectors, understanding pricing, and focusing on metrics. She provides advice to new PSLI attendees: Participate!

The PSLI is a unique executive development program for high-performance marketers and managers. It is targeted to globally prominent professional and B2B companies that demonstrate a notable commitment to pursuing marketplace excellence. The PSLI is unique in its approach because it only allows non-competing companies to become sponsors. JLL, T. Rowe Price, PwC and Randstad were the PSLI’s sponsoring companies for 2014-15.

In the last two years, these world-class professional enterprises have sent more than 40 high-performing marketers to the PSLI. Topics included marketing models, global branding, digital marketing, data analytics, partnering with agencies, integrating marketing and sales teams, and client experience management. The group also completed team-based Action Learning Projects, in which they applied what they learned to real problems facing their companies.
